Refereeing is paid work, and it’s one of the best ways to stay involved in the sport you love, whether you’re competing, coaching, or just want a new way to contribute.
There’s a clear path to grow as an official. You’ll start as an E-level referee working local competitions, From there you can earn your provincial certification as an R, upgrade to P after having worked as a referee for while and been assessed by other more experienced referees. lastly you can go on to work national competitions as an N-level referee.
Refereeing also makes you a better fencer. Watching bouts through a referee’s eyes sharpens your understanding of right-of-way, timing, and tactics in ways that carry straight back to your own game. It gets you out to more tournaments, and the pay can help offset your own competition costs.
Foil and sabre fencers, we’d especially love to see you get involved!
Not sure where to start? The Mark Satasinos Referee Clinic is a great first step. It’ll teach you the fundamentals and prepare you to work as a Referee!
