FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

You are here: Home / About Fencing / FAQ

What is fencing all about?

Fencing is a sport of skill, speed and finesse in which there is little advantage in brute
strength. Fencing is both a physical and a mental workout, in which fencers learn to
hone their strategies against opponents of varying skill levels, and build up physical
endurance, agility, and accuracy.

Why learn the sport of fencing?

Fencing offers a multitude of benefits. Confidence and sportsmanship are gained through
participation in fencing and extend throughout other areas of life. You can begin fencing
as a youth or an adult – for fun, for fitness, or to train to compete. Best of all are the

I am interested in starting a fencing club. How do I get started?

Starting a club is fairly easy in Alberta. All you need is 3 other people to form a Board.

  • Think of a name first.
  • Have your bylaws ready and a couple of other documents.

All the documents can be prepared in a few hours - time to read, fill out their bylaws and other templates, think of a name for the club, and have it all ready to be taken into the closest registry office.

Important Consideration:

Add a dissolution clause to your bylaws. Here is an example:

Upon dissolution of the association, the assets which remain after the payment of all
charges and expenses which are properly incurred in winding up, shall be assigned and
distributed to such organizations as may be involved in the sport of fencing, or to such
charitable organization or organizations as may be determined by the Members of the
association at the time of dissolution. Any assets that are a result of gaming within the
Province of Alberta shall be returned to the Minister of Finance of the Province of
Alberta. This provision is unalterable.

If there are any questions with the documents, the individuals at the registry should be
able to assist you in any inquiries you may have.
